It could happen!

If you ever thought your child's screaming was going to, you know, make something explode, or die, or something...

I'll be sure to tell Gavin to stay away from any poultry.

Reasons I'm glad our yard is fenced...

It seems we have really lazy wildlife around here - they can't be bothered to dig through the snow to find something to eat when it's so easy to just stop by town and grab a bite. We've been seeing a lot of deer and moose around, and in the last two days we've had a cow moose and a baby on our street, Gavin and Greg saw a moose and then a deer on their way home from school this morning, and then this moose just after lunch today. I was sitting on the computer and first saw him out the window on my front sidewalk! (Hello there, I said, somewhat surprised to see a big furry beast not six feet from where I was sitting.)

Digging out from the big storm of '07

Most of Alberta was hit by a big snowstorm this past Tuesday and Wednesday - we got about 16cm snow, which isn't that bad, but the wind blew constantly for those two days and left behind some massive drifts in places!

Our neighbors had a snowdrift taller than Greg on their driveway blocking in their vehicles! (We were able to just shovel the driveway out.) Greg attempted to go to work on Wednesday afternoon, and almost didn't make it. As it was he called me when he got to work (which is only four blocks away, remember) and said it was a really bad idea to even try - a ton of snow got sucked into the engine as he plowed through the drifts in the middle of the road, and the smell from the engine was so bad I could smell it on Greg's clothes when he walked in the door. The car seems to have survived alright, though...

Even on Thursday there were only two kids at school in Gavin's class - the busses still weren't running and a lot of the town kids tend to stay home when they hear there's no busses. :)

The sidewalk leading from our back gate up to the deck - honestly, it was bare before the storm came.

Our front sidewalk the morning after.

We opened the back door to put out some garbage and were surprised to find a big snow drift against the door!

Things seem to be getting back to normal now, although there's still a few roads in Beaverlodge that haven't yet been plowed. Just crazy Alberta weather, I guess!

Skating lessons - day 1

Gavin started skating lessons this afternoon, in the middle of a giant blizzard (fortunately we only live three blocks from the rink, but still!). I was a little concerned how he was going to do since when I reminded him this morning that it was skating day, his response was "Oh NO! Oh no! I'm going to FALL!" He thankfully developed some excitement as the day went on, and he did really well for having only been on skates a couple of times in his life!

Skating lessons run twice a week until the end of March, so we'll see what kind of improvement he makes as the weeks go on!
